Testing available

1. In-consultation testing using health screening tools, bio impedance testing , zinc testing

2. Salivary hormone testing and adrenal health testing using saliva

This test allows us to determine levels of oestrogen (three types) testosterone, progesterone, DHEA and cortisol if ordered. This tells us many things about the body including hormone levels, effects on hormone breakdown and liver, adrenal stress.

A treatment plan is then put into place to assist your wellbeing. It is easily done using saliva with a simple at-home collection which is then sent to a testing lab in Melbourne. Results take approx. 2-3 weeks to come back. It is available for both men and women. Cost varies depending on hormones ordered.

3. Hair mineral analysis testing

What is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)?

HTMA is a safe and non-invasive pathology test. It measures the levels and comparative ratios of nutrient and toxic minerals found in hair.

HTMA is regarded by many doctors, naturopaths and nutritional therapists as one of the most valuable screening tools available in everyday and preventative health care.

Why test for minerals?

Minerals are essential for growth, healing, vitality and wellbeing. They provide structural support in bones and teeth, and they maintain the body’s pH and water balance, nerve activity, muscle contractions, energy production and enzyme reactions. They are the basic ‘spark plugs’ of life.

Ideally, we should get all the minerals we need from a balanced diet. Unfortunately today this is rarely possible. Modern farming techniques, fertilisers and depleted soils reduce the mineral content of foods. Environmental pollutants, chemical food additives and stressful lifestyles also have a detrimental effect on our nutritional status.

Many health conditions are aggravated by mineral imbalances and toxic metal excesses, including cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, migraines, learning difficulties and hyperactivity in children, to name just a few. 4. MTHFR gene saliva swab test

5. Other pathology can be ordered at a non Medicare covered expense as well as complete digestive stool analysis.

(e.g.  full thyroid profile, MTHFR swab test, complete digestive stool analysis, iodine spot testing)

6. Nutritional DNA testing- several packages available. Prices on enquiry. Turn around time 2 weeks

Wellbeing test

This test covers up to 60 DNA changes. The Wellness Test is the most affordable, scientifically up to date and comprehensive analysis. The test uses a small amount of saliva and is sent away to be tested in Australia. You receive a full report with your individual nutrition DNA data, including genes such as COMT and MTHFR. Test covers the areas listed below

  • Health summary of key single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and how these impact or are impacted by various processes in the body.
  • methylation
  • neurotransmitter production and function
  • hormone metabolis
  • detoxification
  • antioxidant status
  • nutrient metabolism and absorption
  • cardiovascular disease risk
  • energy metabolism
  • DNA expression

Hormones and Fertility Profile

Includes SNPs that provide critical insights into oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid and luteinising hormone function, as well as SNPs that indicate for the MTHFR gene.

Mood and Cognition Profile

Tests for SNPs associated with the production, function and metabolism of key neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, histamine and GABA.

Please enquire re these tests. They can be ordered without a consultation, but you will need a consultation to review the test.

7. Referral for a pyrolle urine test, and subsequent copper, zinc, histamine bloods if needed.

A prescription for compounded supplements written if required.

What is Pyrrole Disorder?

Pyrrole disorder is also known as Pyrrole Disorder, Kryptopyrrole, Kryptopyrroluria, Pyrroluria, Pyrrole Disorder, Mauve Factor or Hemepyrrole.

Pyrrole disorder is best described as the abnormal synthesis and metabolism of the oxygen carrying molecule in your blood, called haemoglobin. It is a genetically inherited but correctable biochemical imbalance. According to Dr.Lam (see reference for his website), “It can be purely genetic or acquired through environmental and emotional stress and especially from leaky gut syndrome and the overuse of antibiotics. Charles Darwin is thought to have been afflicted. ”

In most humans, kryptopyrrole (known scientifically as hydroxyhemoppyrrolin-2-one or HPL) causes no problems and is simply excreted from the body via the urine. But for those with the disorder it means that the HPL level is abnormally high, and as a result, the receptor sites for vitamin b6 and zinc are bound up and cannot be used correctly. This, in turn, can lead to many issues within the body, including oxidative stress.

Here is a list of symptoms that are common with pyrrole disorder.

This has been taken from Applied Analytical Laboratories information pamphlet as I think this explains it well;

“The result can be a myriad of symptoms including inner tension, anxiety, depression, anaemia, pessimism, poor stress control, fearfulness, episodic anger, poor short term memory, gastrointestinal disorders, and frequent infections. Elevated urinary pyrrole levels are found in Down syndrome (70%), Schizophrenia (up to 70%), autism (50%), ADHD (30%), and alcoholism (up to 80%). 43% of patients diagnosed with arthritis, chronic fatigue, heart disease, hypertension, irritable bowel, and migraine have elevated urinary pyrroles”

People with pyrrole disorder tend not to handle stress well and in turn, stress makes the problem worse.  Often iron levels have been an issue for many years as well. Often there is a family history of the above issues.  B6 especially is needed for healthy brain neurotransmitters and a deficiency of this can compound the problems listed above.

About 10 percent of the population at large has the disorder. Info taken from Dr.Lam (see reference below for more info)

Physical characteristics associated with pyrrole disorder can include:

  • Acne, eczema, or herpes
  • Coarse eyebrows and lack of hair on head, eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Cold hands and feet
  • White spots on fingernails (zinc deficiency)
  • Paper thin skin
  • Creaking knees
  • Fat concentrated in mid-section
  • Increased number of stretch marks
  • Poor tooth enamel
  • Overcrowded teeth in the upper jaw

Your test is done via a urine sample in a controlled environment and sent away to a testing lab. The analysis is very sensitive. Samples containing levels of urinary HPL of 0 – 10 μg/dL are considered normal or negative, samples of 10 – 20 μg/dL are considered borderline, and samples above 20 μg/dL are considered elevated.

Upon receipt of the results, the best course of treatment will be determined for you, based on age and your symptoms. It is not simply a matter of supplementing with high dose b6 and zinc. Each person will vary in their needs and the type of supplement they will tolerate (forms of zinc vary in absorption and often cheaper forms will make pyrrole patients ill). For children, there are cream and liquid forms available if compliance is an issue (not stocked but can be compounded via a pharmacy in Sydney with a script from me).

Supplements are important due to the nature of the condition. The pyrrole patient has an increased need for therapeutic zinc and b6 doses. This is something that the patient generally needs to remain on (although doses can vary).  A good quality diet is still important.

There is the consideration of excess copper, which tends to affect older people more. Sometimes there will be a worsening of symptoms on beginning zinc as copper is being pushed from the body. We tend to like to go slow and steady here when starting supplements. Treatment is given if this is occurring to support the body clear the copper.

It is a good idea to have your zinc and copper levels checked if you are diagnosed with pyrrole. This can help us determine dosage, and also track how your process is going.  This is a non medicare covered expense.

Of course, as part of any naturopathic treatment, we are looking at the whole person, and any nervous system support, thyroid support, adrenal or leaky gut issues will be assessed. Manganese and magnesium, iron, as well as biotin are helpful nutrients with this disorder and may be used as part of treatment also in a combined formula.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are concerned about your treatment process. 8. Hair500 testing for bio-compatibility

Hair500 food and environmental compatibility testing

What is the test?

Using hair samples, Bio-Compatibility testing identifies the influence (either positive or negative) that each of a wide range of foods and products has on the body. In this way, we are then able to determine which foods and products should be avoided and which should be consumed/used.

The basis for the programme is simple: consuming ‘bio-incompatible’ foods/products and avoiding those that lead to health problems.

Bio-Compatibility Hair Analysis is about finding foods and household products that suit the individual. It is not based on Nutritional advice nor is it a Medical programme designed to treat diseases.

When to use this test:

We use this test if you are suffering with skin problems, eczema, unusual rashes, psoriasis, sinus, digestive issues such as bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel, constipation,

Inflammatory conditions such as joint pain, arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease, fatigue and muscle pain, children with behaviour issues.

It is a non-intrusive test and therefore ideal for children. It does not matter if the hair is coloured.

Which foods are tested?

A comprehensive list of 500 common Australian food items from all food groups plus bathroom, laundry and kitchen products are tested. There are specific additional lists available for Aldi, Woolworths or Coles.  Follow-up testing can be done 6 months after the initial testing if required.

There is also a baby’s list which adds another 57 commonly used items for babies, including creams and powders, medications, shampoos, soaps, wipes, nappies, formula and commercial baby foods.

It is important to note that this hair analysis test is VERY different from common hair mineral analysis testing or any of that kind of test, because it involves testing at a much deeper level. Consuming bio-compatible foods/products enhances cellular function, which leads to good organ function, which leads to good immunity and elimination, NATURALLY.

The Bio-Compatibility System is the result of 30 years of research and development.

The report includes:

  1. Test results for over 500+ items from local supermarkets.
  2. Day to day instructions to help you implement the programme correctly.
  3. General information on the different food groups.
  4. A ‘4-week Progress form’ which you fill out and return. This information is used to assess your progress and make changes if necessary. Your response to the programme is individual so we like to follow-up and assist you to gain the most benefit.
